Notaito › Guides › Notes app with version history
Which notes apps keep earlier versions of a note?
Short answer: Notaito keeps 90 days of earlier versions of every note, on every device, on the free plan. Evernote's note history works on Mac, Windows and the web but not its phone apps. Google Keep lets you download a text file of previous versions on the web. Apple's Notes guides describe no version history at all.
A bin protects you when you delete a note. It does nothing when you overwrite one, and overwriting is how most notes are really lost: a paste in the wrong place, an old copy syncing over a new one, an edit you regret an hour later. Version history is the feature that covers that. Here is what four notes apps say they keep, from their own help pages, as of 27 October 2026.
| App | What it keeps | Where it works | Can you restore? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Notaito | Earlier versions of every note, for 90 days, on the free plan. | Every device, including the phone, because it is a web app. | Yes. Restore a version or copy text from it. Ctrl+Z also undoes the last action. |
| Google Keep | Previous versions of a note. Pictures are not included, and the help page does not say how far back it goes. | On the web only. On Android, Google says to use keep.google.com on a computer. | You can download a text file of previous versions. The help page does not describe restoring one. |
| Evernote | Note history. The help page does not say how long versions are kept or which plan includes it. | Mac, Windows and the web. Not the iOS or Android apps. | Yes, it restores older versions of a note. |
| Apple Notes | No earlier wordings of a note. Apple's guides describe only Recently Deleted, which keeps a deleted note for 30 days. | iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Vision Pro, and iCloud.com in a browser. | You can recover a deleted note. Apple documents no way to restore an earlier wording of one. |
What to look for
- Restore, not just view. A list of old versions you cannot go back to is a log, not a safety net.
- Your phone too. Many edits happen on the phone. A history that only works on a computer does not cover them.
- How long. A week is enough for a typo. Losing a note you only miss a month later needs longer.
- Pictures. Check whether images are part of the history or only the text.
How Notaito does it
Every note has a clock button that opens its earlier versions. Each version shows when it was saved, with Restore and Copy. Versions are kept for 90 days, on the free plan as well as paid ones, and old ones are tidied away daily so they do not pile up for ever.
Two devices editing the same note is the other common way to lose work. Notaito joins the two edits when it can, and keeps the other wording as a copy rather than dropping it.
It is not a replacement for a backup. Notaito can export your whole notebook as a zip, with Markdown, your pictures and a backup file, and import it again. Do that now and then.
