Evernote alternative: Notaito compared with Evernote
Short answer: Stay with Evernote if you lean on its Web Clipper, desktop apps and unlimited paid plan. Choose Notaito if you hit the free plan's 50-note, one-device limit, or want notes filed under projects, earlier versions on every device, a lock with a recovery code, and AI that is off until you turn it on.
Evernote's free plan stops at 50 notes and one device, and the paid plans were renamed and repriced. That is the usual reason people start looking. This page compares the two on the things that decide it, and says plainly where Evernote is the better tool.
| Notaito | Evernote | |
|---|---|---|
| Free plan | Up to 2,000 active notes and 100 projects, on any device you sign in on. 1 GB for pictures and PDFs, and 50 AI-filed notes a month. | 50 notes, 1 notebook and 1 device (the web app counts as a device), with 1 GB of storage. Notes in the trash still count toward the 50. |
| Paid plans | Plus and Household are optional. Plus adds more AI and more storage. See the plans. | Starter is US$14.99 a month or US$99 a year (1,000 notes, 20 notebooks, 3 devices). Advanced is US$24.99 a month or US$249.99 a year (no note or device limits). |
| Where it runs | Any browser, installable to the Home Screen as a web app. No store app, no widgets. | Mac and Windows apps, iOS and Android apps, and the web. Web Clipper for Chrome, Safari and Firefox. |
| Earlier versions of a note | Every note, 90 days, on every device, free. | Note history works on Mac, Windows and the web, not on iOS or Android. Evernote's help page does not say how long versions are kept or which plan includes it. |
| Locking | Lock a whole note with a passphrase and a recovery code. | You can encrypt selected text inside a note (Mac, Windows, web), not a whole note. There is no recovery if you lose the passphrase. |
| AI | The main AI switch (Auto-organise with AI) is off for every new account, and you can keep chosen projects out of AI. | Individual AI features can be turned on or off in settings. The help pages describe no single switch for all of them. |
| Getting your notes out | A zip with Markdown, your pictures and a backup file, from the browser. You can import it again. | ENEX, HTML or PDF, from the Mac and Windows desktop apps only (not the web), up to 100 notes at a time or whole notebooks. Free accounts can export. |
| AI assistants (MCP) | Connect Claude, Codex or another MCP app with your Google sign-in. | An MCP connector is in beta for paid plans. |
Where Evernote is the better choice
- Web Clipper. Saving web pages into your notes from Chrome, Safari or Firefox is something Evernote does well and Notaito does not.
- Desktop apps. The Mac and Windows apps keep your synced notes on the computer and work without a connection. Notaito runs in the browser.
- Size. Advanced has no note or device limits. A Notaito notebook holds up to 2,000 active notes.
- Your archive. If you have years of notes in Evernote, they are already there and organised the way you like. Moving costs time.
What Notaito does differently
No 50-note wall. The free plan is a working notebook, not a trial. You write in one running list and each note is filed under a project, by you or, if you switch AI on, by Notaito.
Earlier versions where you are. Version history works on every device, including the phone, for 90 days.
A lock you can recover. A locked note is encrypted in your browser. Alongside the passphrase you get a recovery code.
AI is yours to switch. The main AI switch is off until you turn it on, and you can keep chosen projects out of AI altogether.
What Notaito does not do
- No Web Clipper and no store app or widgets.
- No importer for Evernote's ENEX files. It reads its own backup and any Markdown or plain-text outline.
- It is not an archive for tens of thousands of notes: a notebook holds up to 2,000 active notes, and one note can be up to 20,000 characters.
Moving over from Evernote
Export from the Evernote desktop app first (ENEX, HTML or PDF), so you have a copy of everything whatever you decide. Then bring across the notes you still use by pasting them into Notaito.
You do not have to leave on a deadline. Evernote says an account over its plan limits can still view, edit and export its notes but cannot create new ones, and that cancelling a paid plan does not delete your notes. Try Notaito alongside Evernote for a few weeks before you decide.
Questions people ask
What are Evernote's free plan limits?
Up to 50 notes and 1 notebook, with sync on one device at a time (the web app counts as a device) and 1 GB of storage. Notes in the trash still count toward the 50.
How much does Evernote cost in 2026?

Can I export my notes from Evernote?
Yes, as ENEX, HTML or PDF, but only from the Mac and Windows desktop apps, not the web. Free accounts can export.
Does Evernote have version history?
Note history works on Mac, Windows and the web, not on the iOS or Android apps. Evernote's help page does not say how long versions are kept or which plan includes it.
